It was with great pleasure that I accepted the commission for Marycliff/Undercliff
mansion. After photographing the current modern business park version of the school grounds, my inspiration came from a yearbook inside cover page from the 70’s found in the Spokane Dioceses’ records vault. It was important to confirm the
Madonna in the grotto, which I felt compelled to include in the painting.
Marrycliff High School first opened its doors in 1929 and graduated its first class in 1933, consisting of 46 women. The school closed in 1979. The Marycliff site was recorded in the National Register of Historic places in 1980. The “Undercliff” mansion (donated to the Diocese of Spokane by B.L. Gordon’s widow in 1929 for use as a Catholic girls’ school) was built in 1896 by Spokane pioneer F. Lewis Clark. The mansion was designed by famed Spokane architect Kirtland K. Cutter. Marycliff Hall, a classroom building was built in 1930.
