This photograph was taken on a Saturday while the tower chimes rang out to announce it was 5 PM and the setting sun left a sunburst on the clock tower. I have dreamed of painting, not the tower, but the incredible weeping willow tree that you pass as you drive over the Washington street bridge heading north. Every year I would tell myself, I need to get a picture of that in the fall. Finally, I spent an afternoon wandering through the River Park area and admitted myself out to the chained-off floating platform to capture this inspiring moment.
The tower reflection in the Spokane River was probably the most challenging portion of this painting. To make it look like it was rippling, but still the tower reflection. As usual I was attracted to the intense, brilliant fall colors. Those plants along the river truly are that color! I am always drawn to spires and bridges, so this piece was a natural for me. I have been looking at that clock tower my entire life, but I believe after painting it, I am actually “seeing” it for the first time.
